When a voucher is issued one bedroom will be assigned for the single Head of Household or a couple living together in a spousal relationship, with additional bedrooms assigned for each two household members thereafter regardless of age and/or gender. (You have the option of renting a larger unit if your portion of the rent and utilities does not exceed 70% of your adjusted monthly income.)
The order of admission from the waiting list may
not be based on family size or on the family unit size for which the
family qualifies under HAP's Occupancy Standards. If HAP does not have
sufficient funds to subsidize the family unit size of the family at
the top of the waiting list, HAP may not skip the top family to admit
an applicant with a smaller family unit size. Instead, the family at
the top of the waiting list will be admitted when sufficient funds are
available.
- The requested Voucher size allows the family to locate a unit that
will provide at least one bedroom or living/sleeping room of appropriate
size for each two persons.
- Two unrelated adults, both of whom meet all other eligibility requirements
and need to provide support to each other because of a disability,
may be issued a two-bedroom Voucher.
- A child who is temporarily away from the home because of placement
in a foster home is considered a member of the family determining
unit size. However, if the child or children are projected to be out
of the home for more than six (6) months, the Voucher will be reduced,
as appropriate.
- Any live-in aide approved by HAP to reside in the unit to care for
a family member who is disabled or is at least 50 years of age (near-elderly)
must be counted in determining family size.
HAP will grant exceptions to the above standards if HAP determines
that the exceptions are justified by disability of family members, or other individual circumstances. The family must provide written documentation justifying the exception before an exception will be considered.
