Gresham City Councilor Michael Bennett Joins HAP Board

PORTLAND, Ore. – March 19, 2008 – Michael Bennett, a member of the Gresham City Council, has joined the Housing Authority of Portland’s (HAP) Board of Commissioners. Bennett fills one of two Gresham seats on the nine-member volunteer citizen commission.

“We are very pleased to have an elected government official on the HAP board,” said Jeff Bachrach, board chair, “We welcome strong voices, and I’m sure Mike will be an effective advocate for Gresham and East Multnomah County on the commission.”

Bennett, who was elected to the Gresham City Council in November 2006, said he was joining the board to forge stronger ties with HAP. “My primary objective is to foster closer relationships and increase coordination between the City of Gresham and HAP. This will benefit the work of both entities and the citizens we serve.”

He ran for public office in Gresham out of a commitment to the city and a desire to help it grapple with its growth issues. “I want to make sure we have a vibrant community,” he says, “and I want to make sure that we stay within our resources to achieve that goal.”

Before being elected to the Gresham council, Bennett served on the city’s Finance Committee. He brings career experience in high tech engineering, project management, and consulting to his public service roles, serving as principle facilities engineer at ON Semiconductor (formerly LSI Logic). He attended Arizona State University.
