Housing Authority of Portland Sponsors National Night Out Celebrations
Largest at New Columbia, where 1,000 are expected to attend festivities at McCoy Park
PORTLAND, Ore. – August 1, 2007 – The Housing Authority of Portland (HAP) is sponsoring National Night Out celebrations at its housing communities throughout Multnomah County on Tuesday, August 7. The festivities are being planned for residents and neighbors to enjoy the summer evening, deepen ties, and learn more about public safety programs in the area. A sampling of the events includes:
- New Columbia, McCoy Park, 5:30 - 8:00 p.m., HAP is joining with community partners, including the Portland Office of Neighborhood Involvement, in sponsoring the event. Activities will include music by the Andy Stokes Band, bingo, the Oregon Zoo ZAP team (petting zoo), face painting and crazy hats courtesy of the Portland Parks Rec and Roll bus, Portland Police mounted and canine units, and the Portland Fire Department. A hot dog dinner and raffle are part of the evening.
- Dahlke Manor, 915 NE Schuyler St., 4:30 - 6:30 p.m., hotdog and hamburger dinner, cake walk and water balloon toss.
- Hillsdale Terrace, 6775 SW 26th Ave., 4:-00 - 6:00 p.m., barbecue dinner provided by Multnomah Presbyterian Church, performance by the Westside Dance Troupe, arts and crafts events sponsored by the SW Community Center, face painting, balloon animals, and members of the Portland Police and Fire Departments will attend the event.
- Hollywood East apartments, 4400 NE Broadway, 4:30 - 7:30 p.m., barbecue dinner, live music, face painting and yard games.
- Northwest Tower, 335 NW 19th Ave., 4:00 - 8:00 p.m., barbecue dinner, live music, and a display of artwork created by the residents.
- Ruth Haefner Plaza, 6005 SW Beaverton-Hillsdale Hwy., 4:30 - 6:30 p.m., ice cream social.
- Williams Plaza, 2041 NW Everett St., 5:30 - 7:30 p.m., barbecue dinner and music by local band Afincando, which is donating their time.
National Night Out is the biggest community event of the year promoting crime prevention with millions of people participating from around the world. It is an annual event designed to generate support for and participation in local public safety programs, heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, promote neighborhood organizing as a strategy to deter crime, improve public safety, and celebrate community policing.
